DNA BARCODING Single-Species Identification single-species identification using genetic analysis based on tissue sample. Read More Get a Quote DNA Barcoding DNA Barcoding is a method of species identification using a short section of DNA from a specific gene or genes. Different gene regions are used to identify the different organismal groups using barcoding. The most commonly used barcode region for animals is a portion of the COI gene, ITS rRNA used for fungi, RuBisCo used for plants, 16s rRNA used for prokaryotes, and 18s rRNA used for microbial eukaryotes. Application for Species Identification Specific short DNA sequences or markers from a standardized region of the genome can provide a DNA barcode for identifying species. Molecular methods are especially useful when traditional methods are not applicable. DNA barcoding has great applicability in identification of larvae for which there are generally few diagnostic characters available, and in association of different life stages in animals. Identification of species listed in the convention of the international trade of endangered species (CITES) appendixes using barcoding techniques is used in illegal trade monitoring. We deliver reliable nature environment data that empower companies and institutions to make informed, responsible decisions. Our track record spans across private companies, universities, NGOs, and government agencies HIGHLIGHTED PROJECTS Biodiversity screening Infrastructure development - Kepulauan Riau For infrastructure development on small islands, we apply an integrated approach to screening freshwater biota to identify potential Critical Habitat triggers under IFC Performance Standard 6. Habitat mapping is conducted using aerial drone surveys, allowing high-resolution identification of rivers, streams, wetlands, and other freshwater features. These spatial data provide the foundation for selecting representative sampling locations across the island. To complement the habitat mapping, we employ eDNA metabarcoding targeting freshwater fishes and crustaceans, enabling efficient and sensitive detection of species that may be rare, cryptic, migratory, or difficult to observe directly. This combination of aerial habitat characterization and molecular species inventories provides a robust, cost-effective method for assessing biodiversity patterns. Biodiversity survey for Critical Habitat Assessment Oil and gas - Bintuni We conducted a comprehensive biodiversity survey to support Critical Habitat Assessment (CHA) for an oil and gas development in the Bintuni region of West Papua. The assessment integrated terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecological surveys, combining classical field methods with genetic tools such as eDNA metabarcoding to detect key species groups with high sensitivity. Our team mapped priority habitats, documented species presence across multiple taxa (Mammals, Bird, Plants, Fish, Marine Mammals) and evaluated potential triggers under IFC Performance Standard 6, including threatened species, restricted-range taxa, and key biodiversity features. The resulting dataset provided the client with a robust scientific basis for risk management, impact mitigation, and regulatory compliance ensuring project planning aligned with international biodiversity standards and national conservation priorities. Marine Biodiversity Survey to Support ESIA study Mining industry - East Halmahera We conducted a comprehensive marine biodiversity survey in East Halmahera to support the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process for coastal and offshore development. The assessment covered multiple ecological components, including plankton sampling, coral reef surveys, and marine pelagic fauna observations, providing an integrated understanding of ecosystem health and species composition. To enhance detection sensitivity, we complemented classical survey methods with eDNA metabarcoding, enabling the identification of marine fishes and elasmobranchs across various habitats. This combined approach delivered a robust, high-resolution biodiversity baseline that informed impact prediction, mitigation planning, and compliance with national and international environmental standards. Terrestrial Biodiversity Survey to Support ESIA study Mining industry - Southeast Sulawesi Oceanogen conducted an integrated aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity survey in Southeast Sulawesi to support the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for a large-scale development project. The study combined aquatic ecology assessments including surface water quality measurements, habitat characterization, and freshwater biota observations with a comprehensive suite of terrestrial surveys. Our terrestrial program applied camera traps to document medium-large mammals, alongside bird surveys, passive acoustic monitoring for bats, and detailed vegetation assessments to characterize habitat structure and floristic diversity. Additional surveys targeted reptiles, amphibians, and insects, ensuring full coverage of key biodiversity groups relevant to impact prediction and regulatory compliance. This multi-taxa approach produced a robust baseline dataset for the client, enabling accurate impact evaluation, informed mitigation planning, and alignment with national and international ESIA and biodiversity management requirements. Artificial Reef (Rig2Reef) Biodiversity Monitoring Oil and Gas - East Borneo The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), supported by KMOUC, conducted the second monitoring program for the artificial reef under the Pilot Project for Decommissioning and Rig-to-Reef (R2R) Re-utilization of Offshore Platforms in Indonesia, located offshore Bontang, East Kalimantan. Oceanogen contributed to this effort by monitoring biodiversity on artificial reef structures created from decommissioned rig platforms. Our survey combined eDNA metabarcoding detecting species from traces of DNA in the water with conventional underwater assessments, enabling us to capture both visible megafauna and cryptic species inhabiting the structure at depths of up to 42 meters. This integrated approach provides a clearer, more comprehensive understanding of how rigs-turned-reefs function as habitats, and how effectively they support marine life over time.
